Reverse lookup is the function which obtains the host name from an IP address. This is also referred to reverse resolving, or DNS, Reverse DNS lookup, to look up a host name. This process is often executed to diagnose network issues or investigate where network data is going. Entering a known IP address in an online lookup tool performs a reverse lookup test on an IP address. Reverse lookups can also locate addresses based on phone number entries. From the results of reverse lookup tests, one may be able to identify the domain name of a spammer, the domain name of a computer trying to break into your firewall, or if someone is trying to hack into the system. A forward-confirmed reverse DNS verification can create a form of authentication showing a valid relationship between the owner of a domain name and the owner of the server that has been given an IP address. While not very thorough, this validation is strong enough to often be used for whitelisting purposes, mainly because spammers and phishers usually can't pass verification for it when they use computers and not manually forge domains. In the past, Internet registries and ISPs allocated IP addresses in blocks of 256 (for Class C) or larger octet-based blocks for classes B and A. By definition, each block fell upon an octet boundary. The structure of the reverse DNS domain was based on this definition. However, with the introduction of Classless Inter-Domain Routing, IP addresses were allocated in much smaller blocks, and hence the original design of pointer records was impractical, since autonomy of administration of smaller blocks could not be granted. This information coming from lookup test results can also be used to determine the name of the internet service provider assigned to a specific IP address. The original use of the rDNS: network troubleshooting via tools such as traceroute, ping, and web sites tracking users (especially on Internet forums), etc. In Windows, nslookup (Name Server Lookup) is another tool which allows users to query the DNS system to obtain the domain name or IP address. This can be useful tool for troubleshooting and serves the purpose to find domain names or IP addresses as well as for mapping DNS records.
